New and Old School #Horrortober Flicks: Excision and Black Sabbath

Jack here with a couple of Horrortober movie reviews.

Black Sabbath
, not the band, the 1963 horror anthology w Boris Karloff as host & a vampire. Old school fun for #Horrortober

I watched Black Sabbath today. This 1963 horror anthology film is available on Netflix and is a fun, old school Halloween season movie. It features Boris Karloff as the host/narrator and he also stars in the third and longest segment, a vampire story. A very interesting chapter in this horror legend’s career.

Boris Karloff gets ahead.

@BackinJack Tweet:
Excision
is a bizarre, bloody drama horror film w an all-star cast led by a stellar AnnaLynne McCord. Weird. 3 out of 5 claws. #Horrortober

The first Horrortober movie for me was Excision. (2012) This movie is about a disturbed high school student with medical aspirations and her bizarre, bloody fantasies. It’s a strange movie that is worth a look for a couple of reasons. First, the gorgeous AnnaLynne McCord is practically unrecognizable as the lead and does a great job carrying the film. Second, there is an all-star cast including Traci Lords, Ariel Winter, Malcolm McDowell, Matthew Gray Gubler, Marlee Matlin, Ray Wise, and John Waters.

Apartment 7C and +1

Just finished reading David Bernstein’s APARTMENT 7C. Once again, he has scored another winner. In this novella, find out what happens when an octogenarian has had enough with the abusive cop who lives next door. I actually wanted to cheer out loud at parts of the book. A perfect book for Horrortober!

I watched a cool little flick called +1. Netflix categorized it under horror, but it’s really a scifi movie. Think PROJECT X crossed with INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Lots o boobs at a crazy ass house party and a plot that keeps you guessing. The pool house scene at the end makes the trip worth it.

Make Way for Doctor Sleep

When Stephen King announced he was going to release a sequel to his masterpiece, The Shining, we here at Monster Men HQ were skeptical. What were the odds that a book about a middle-aged Danny Torrance could hold our attention and scare the pants off us?

Well, there’s a damn good reason why Stephen King is called a Horror Master. It took guts to even attempt making a sequel, and talent to craft a story so spellbinding. Find out more in our latest episode and pick up your copy.

Redrum, baby! Redrum.

The Cursed Man Meets The Monster Men: Keith Rommel Interview

0

The Monster Men are very happy to present an interview with author Keith Rommel. This was one of our favorite episodes we have ever recorded. We are sure you’re going to enjoy it.

Keith is the author of THE CURSED MAN, an incredibly original, creepy and entertaining book that is also currently in production as a movie. It’s a great read. This, along with his other books, THE LURKING MAN and the upcoming THE SINFUL MAN, are part of his Thanatology Series. The Encyclopedia Britannica defines Thanatology as “the description or study of death and dying and the psychological mechanisms of dealing with them.” That should set the stage for you.

Here’s the description for THE CURSED MAN:

Alister Kunkle believes death is in love with him.  A simple smile from friend or stranger is all it takes to encourage death to kill.

With his family deceased and a path of destruction behind him, Alister sits inside a mental institution, sworn to silence and separated from the rest of the world, haunted by his inability to escape death’s preferential treatment.

But when a beautiful psychologist arrives at the institution and starts offering him care, Alister braces himself for more killings.  When none follow, he tries to figure out whether he truly is insane or if death has finally come to him in the form of a woman.

Keith is a fantastic author and a person to keep your eye on. His work is turning a lot of heads and is being described as being in the spirit of Stephen King. High praise indeed.

Keith is also great guy and has absolutely cemented his place as a Monster Man. As you watch this interview, you can’t help but like him. He’s friendly, entertaining and quite candid. We learned the stories behind his books as well as what it’s like to have one of your novels made into a film. It is fascinating. We also partake in some great horror movie and TV talk, as is par for the course on the Monster Men video podcast.

For all things Keith Rommel, visit his website at http://keithrommel.weebly.com and pick up his books on Amazon.

Monster Hunting with Lyle Blackburn

1

This episode of Monster Men is such a big event, we had to present it in two parts. This time out we interview renowned monster hunter Lyle Blackburn, author of THE BEAST OF BOGGY CREEK and LIZARD MAN. His books are must reads for fans of cryptozoology, urban legends and monsters.

Lyle Blackburn Part 1: The Lizard Man

Lyle Blackburn Part 2: The Beast of Boggy Creek

In part one of our interview we focus on the Lizard Man, the mysterious monster of Bishopville, NC. Lyle investigated this case firsthand and his stories and accounts from actual witnesses will astound you. He’s got every angle covered and his book is fascinating.

In part two of our interview, we discuss Lyle’s true passion, the legendary Fouke Monster of Boggy Creek. Ever since Lyle saw the movie “The Legend of Boggy Creek” as a kid, he has been fascinated by this Bigfoot-like creature that lurked the very swamps near where his family would vacation. Now Lyle is a leading authority on this topic and his book, THE BEAST OF BOGGY CREEK, is the definitive source on the subject.

Naturally, it would not be an episode of Monster Men if we didn’t do a little movie and TV talk. We also discuss some of Lyle’s favorite horror movies, monsters and TV shows and find we have a lot in common with him. We also find out what it’s like to hang out with the guys from FINDING BIGFOOT.

We are sure you’re going to love this episode. We sure did. After the show, be sure to check out Lyle’s books. For all things Lyle Blackburn, you can visit his website at www.lyleblackburn.com

A phantom that appears solid, real, alive. Cassandra’s husband, Brian, sees him in the house, by her bedside, running down darkened hallways. The boy walks without sound, whispers words that can’t be deciphered.

Terror and tension are driving Brian to the breaking point. Why is the boy there, and what does he want with Cassandra…and her fading soul?

Episode 53 : An Interview with Horror Author Robert Stava

0

Arrrrrgggh! We’re back with another interview, this time with author Robert Stava to talk about his newest book, THE FEAST OF ST. ANNE. This is book 2 in his mysterious Wyvern Falls series. Truly strange and creepy stuff.

Before we get to the interview, here’s a little about the book :

Welcome back to the village of Wyvern Falls, here along the Hudson in that sleepy region with the witching influence in the air. This second novel in the ‘Hudson Horror Series’, ‘The Feast of Saint Anne’ brings you not one but four terrifying tales of the supernatural set in their yearly carnival: In “The Red Baron’s Daughter” two boys get more history than they bargained for when a Fortune Teller draws them into the web of a monster with its origins in the deadly skies of the Western Front, circa 1918. Can CID detective John Easton save them from an even grimmer fate? With ‘The Lonely Dancers’ an upcoming band finally show up for their gig – thirty years after they were killed in a tragic accident. Will local musician Nick Carr unravel this murder mystery or is he doomed to relive their tale? The third story, “Lorenzo King and the Dunderberg Imp” takes a new spin on an old Washington Irving classic when a failing New York media hound finds himself in the worst, and deadliest, assignment of his life. But can he outwit this much nastier version of Irving’s river goblin and show everyone who the King really is? And in the final tale, “Hey Dummy!” local Art Director Jim Franks and his girlfriend cross paths with what appears to be an old-fashioned vaudeville act. Only neither ventriloquist nor dummy are what they seem and the answer to their awful secret lies over sixty years in the past with a New Guinea witchdoctor… Four tales. One hair-raising novel. The Feast of Saint Anne.

What to Do During “The Walking Dead” Mid-Season Hiatus

0

WHAT??? No Walking Dead until February 2014? What are you gonna do?

Now that The Walking Dead as gone on its mid-season hiatus, you might be looking for some other zombie related entertainment to get you through the next couple of months. If you look online you’ll find hundreds of Top Ten Zombie Movie lists, but there are really only a few that you should seek out immediately.

Night of the Living Dead: This is pretty obvious, but if you go back and watch this again, you can see just how far the genre has come. There are actually two versions of this movie, and they are both worth watching. The original, black and white version is where George Romero gave birth to the modern version of the zombie and the notion that destroying the brain was the key to stopping them. The other version is the 1990 version that’s in color. While it may seem sacrilegious to remake a classic, this one is a pretty nice update of the original.
